you wanted a guy at my level... you got it |

Chris has worked with me on a few fights but because he lives 30 miles away it's rare when he can get up to Redding. You'd recognize him from Hoax
Exchange, Rogue Hunt, and clips of Michael's Revenge. Anyways he finally got up here and I'm not having an ego but this is probably my most decent test
fight I've made. Sadly he wont probably be in films often. But yeah... me and Mike gang up on him.

This is your best video so far Darren and i'm glad you're posting this fight on here after what happened on the last thread you started.
The blonde hair guy is good. He can kick! He kicks fairly at ease and looks comfortable in the role. The exchange at 42 seconds is good and fast, more of that please! The jump kick at 51 seconds by the other guy is also quite good considering that he doesn't do anything else in the fight. The kicking part at 1 minute is also pretty good and the speed is okay. The music is very good and fits in well, the editing seems to be pretty clean and it's a good fight. Perhaps more exchanges, a faster pace and try and have more straight fighting rather than running around the place. But this is by far your best one yet, keep this up!

Hey you bounced back and look what happened. You got peeved enough to make a way better fight than the one you posted last. So I'm going to take the time
to give you a thorough critique and I hope you don't make me feel like I wasted my lunch hour.
0:17 - 0:19: Kick to your stomach didn't read at all, so a short insert might have worked here to clarify hit+reaction 0:21 - 0:23: Shortening the start of this clip might make the fall make more sense; his momentum doesn't transition from the previous take 0:23 - 0:30: This shot probably went on for longer than it had to without a cut. It lost energy on the front kick chain, and had almost no energy by the time he backrolled on the table 0:35 - 0:36: Presumable you're trying to round-kick his legs out, when he evade with a cartwheel. Does this really make sense for him to do since he's almost putting his hands where his feet used to be? 0:38 - 0:39: Kick to your head missed 0:47 - 0:48: Was such a long slow-motion reaction necessary preceding the double kick? Perhaps to match his lack of preparedness, the reaction shot should run full speed and cut quick to the slow-mo double kick 0:54 - 0:55: Previous take ends mid-motion, this take begins as he's completely still 1:01 - 1:03: What makes the jump cut preceding this take most jarring is Chris suddenly facing in a different direction 1:08 - 1:09: Is it a back kick or low hook? Either way you fell straight back and it's not clear why 1:11 - 1:13: Michael is out of frame when he takes the back kick 1:13 - 1:13: The insert was too quick and didn't emphasize anything 1:14 - 1:18: This angle seems too similar to the one prior to the insert, and the one at 1:11-1:13. The jump-side is also similar to the back kick at 1:11-1:13, so it begins to feel repetitive 1:19 - 1:24: The 180 degree break might be less jarring if in the previous take Chris begun his spin just prior to the cut, and if he was completely obscuring you in the process. The trouble with slow motion strikes it's too obvious they don't connect most of the time, and you really telegraphed that fall. General tips: -If you or your team ever want to do crescent kicks, please stop bending your legs on the follow-through. -If you drop the the tempo on attacks mid-take, or pause mid-take, insert motion with intent between the moves to ensure the energy stays high -Loosen up! |

i like this fight. it was good. one thing though is the knee strikes at around :56 or so looked a little sloppy. I suggest the guy being hit not block so low
so the knee strikes can dig in more. also, the sound effects whenever someone falls sounds like a stick breaking. i dont think that's what you should be
going for.

Dude this was pretty good! There was some sweet stuff in here, I liked the slow mo jump kick exchanges and that bit near the end where Chris (the blond guy
right?) jumps your sweep and kicks the other dude was cooool, I liked it.
My only complaint really would be the sound design, the hits and everything are fine but as maxxyconan says, twice when someone falls over there's a sound like a slap in the face that doesn't fit, and also I'm not too keen on the Matrixy swooshing noises every time someone moves. But that's a pretty minor complaint really

Darren,
Shaun covered all my thoughts on your editing. Now what I'm going to discuss may upset you... BUT, I just finished reading the shit storm that was your last post. I rarely comment on your videos for much the same reason that Eric does not. It seems as though for every single negative criticism you are given you have to defend yourself and sometimes you're just not mindful of how insulting you are to the rest of us. Someone else summed it up quite well by saying that he was sick of being treated like he was a bully when all he, and the rest of us, ever really tried to do was help you. Now, enough of this shit, let's get on with my comment for you. I think you and the other two guys in the video should do much less kicks. Not because I think your choreography is too kick heavy (like I could say that to anyone!!!) but because I feel your kicking skills are all sub-standard. Now, make sure you read the rest of this post before you even begin typing a defense. Before you go and tell me about who has a black belt or how you've only been doing it for so many months please think about what your saying. And consider the following points: (a) Having a black belt means shit all in many TKD school. TKD is probably the most business like martial art on our would and standards drop more and more each year. I trained for 7 years and feel I am a legitimate expert but not a master. Although I am a 3rd Dan I could name other 3rd Dans I know who's kicking skills are laughable. So having a black belt IS NOT permission to show half-assed kicks to an audience UNLESS you want to have people thinking it looks crap. (b) If someone has been training for only a few months then they shouldn't be performing techniques they are miles off reaching a good standard at. If they do then they should expect poor on-screen results and, once again, to have people watching their videos and thinking they're bad. Now, as a former teacher of Taekwondo (and sorry if I sound arrogant but I am a damn good and well respected TKD teacher at that) I would do two things with all three of you guys as soon as I saw you doing those kicks (in your video) in my class/school. (1) I would correct you front kick and roundhouse kick techniques and tell you to not do any other kicks until you had... (2) Do each kick 1000 times on each leg making sure to follow the exact technique I taught you If you want me to write out the technique then just ask and I'll post it in the Martial Arts board soon. Now, what else can we do? Well, I often think you hand work looks nice. Much nicer then the leg work at least. Sometimes it may be too rigid and too repetitive but I think it should be your focus. Grappling... well, I like the look of locks but not ground grappling stuff in films. You decide on this. Lastly, acrobatics... in this video I felt the head spring the blonde guy did was extremely unnecessary... especially after watching the bloopers. Again, it was an example of a move that someone in your video could barely do and it looked bad, therefore you can expect the audience to dislike it. Now, that's all I have to say. Feel free to reply to me in any manner you see fit. However, I suggest that if you're just going to list excuses and defenses for why/how you couldn't do all this etc etc then be warned that I won't bother replying... no matter how tempting it may be. If you are pissed off at me and want to tell me how much of a dickhead I am I will gladly follow you into the RANTS section. Please keep this post for our critiques only. p.s I'm going to take a bit of time to write a long post in the GENERAL board. It will do with my experience with training in different schools and will touch heavily on the topic of filming with students at schools and how the owners of the school feel about it. You may be interested given some of the stuff I read in your last post. |

The only thing I'm gonna say to avoid another argument is that it was Chris's idea to do the handspring and he wanted to do it so I let him.
Also... my handwork is shit.... that's why I put a limit on it (also to avoid it looking like a TKD tournament) cuzz I can't punch worth a damn. That's all... thanks for the comments. I will apply this to my next one.

i haven't watched all your vids, but some. of what i've seen this is the best cinematography. but one thing of vital importance - cut during motion.
there's a lot of cutting while people are still or in poses. you can cut on certain motions while leaving the techniques unobstructed and untouched by
cutting where desired. or during choreo you can say we'll focus on these two techniques and cut on this third one.
or if you have to cut during stillness, be creative about cutting to a very different shot. from a closeup to a wide or vice-versa. Or a one-shot to a two-shot. you're definitely improving here, so try to make this your bar and hopefully only do things at this level and up. if you don't have guys on this level in the future to play and want to play, you can start working more on how to use cinematography to fake like your opponent is a badass. |

Darren, I admire your tenacity. You work hard and post more on here than anyone else while you continue making an effort with your comedy which is improving.
Now let me give you some advice. Concentrate on your own martial arts. As a screen fighter you come across as a nice guy but not very dangerous. Why not start
working on a heavy bag throwing heavy hooks and straight punches, put some muscle on your shoulders and forearms. Everytime you punch onscreen you punch into
the other persons block or parry inches short. Put some fire into your action. Pre production is where you will see most improvement in your work. As regards
your excuses? I never read them.
