I know. It isn't HK style choreography but John Woo made Van Damme look better than ever!
This movie is good with excellent gunplay and Van Damme looks excellent. John Woo really is a masterful director.

Haha good Lord! If only the hand-to-hand fights in Wake of Death were as good as that (for Van Damme standards, that
is)

I remember seeing the movie on VHS after waiting for like two years only to be super disappointed when I saw this scene - the slowest thing I'd ever seen.
I was impressed by every single action movie until I saw van damme - bloodsport was the first thing I laughed at, and in middle school (my first year in America) I rented every movie of his thinking it was going to be good. Thank God I bumped into this dude with boxes of Jackie Chan vhs's. |

It's called slow mo. Featured in many John Woo movies "Wong Fei Hung, I was prepared for that powerful kick of yours!" |

I don't think he's talking about the slow mo.
The pacing is just...uh... You have everyone taking their time coming up to Van Damme only to get finished with a single move. It's just bland.

I dunno, this doesn't really impress me. Jean Claude Van Damme doesn't pull off the graceful look very well.

this is my favourite van damme movie to tell the truth, loved the gunplay but as for the fights , nothing to get excited about.

The fighting is different to what I tend to go for in a fight, it's not fast and not particularly well choreographed.
But it's stylised and John Woo has some ability to make things look absolutely great!

Eh.. ok.... John Whoo filmed it well... but Van Dame's choreography is slowly paced and the moves didn't look good... also the replays were annoying.
As well as the editor cutting everything.

Oh I watched this movie on Freeview ages ago... it was rubbish and it had the bloke from the Alien films in it. Lance Henriksen. Van Damme looked slower than
ever in it. He kicks like a carthorse.

*Warning- pretentious film grad alert*
So, I'm gonna go out on a limb & say that I love this scene. Yeah, it's got it's flaws like not much for exchanges & repetitive slow motion, but it's one of my favorite Van Damme scenes & here's why. It's shot (and mostly cut) entirely like a Western shootout. Almost every angle is straight out of classical Western- the shot between the legs, the cutting back and forth, the choice of music, etc. The shot-reverse shot really reminds me of stuff like The Good the Bad and the Ugly or The Wild Bunch. The coolest part being that Van Damme moves his cut- making the audience think he's going to reveal a gun at his side, but he's just revealing his leg- which becomes symbolic for a gun during the entire fight. Van Damme only kicks with that leg (if I'm not mistaken) throughout the entirety of this particular fight- which doesn't make a lot of sense for a fight scene, but does make sense if that leg were a gun- it'd be the heroes first weapon of choice. I used this scene in my Western class as my finishing argument on martial arts & westerns and I simply can't say enough good stuff about it. |
