Re-using locations |
Lead | |

What are people's thoughts on re-using locations in multiple projects? Sometimes I feel as though it's a sign of a low-budget production, but I
realize it has been done in a number of higher budgeted films (like the coast restaurant used in Dragons Forever & Touch and Go). What are people's
reactions to when you see a location that was used in another un-related movie?

Haha, if it works I don't see why not. Obviously the garage from Manny's latest project has seen plenty of play (Paid Off, Stuntblade Alpha, etc), but
it's a garage, and for the most part that's generic enough to not matter.
On a related note, this has been done on films of all levels of budget as mentioned. The facility from Aliens was later reused in Batman as Axis Chemicals.

It can be cool as in bringing some nastalgic to it.... also I cut people slack when they have lower budgets so it's not something I nic pic over.

In my mind an identical looking-location isn't distracting as long as it's used in a different way in a different movie.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Many movies and tv shows re-use sets and locations. It's cheaper and sometimes necessary. The scene working is
truely what matters.
The movie Mulberry Street used one appartment for multiple appartmnets in the building. They just redressed and rearranged the furniture for each appartment(and it worked!).
"Plissken, what are you doing?"
"Playing with myself. I'm going in."

most low-budget filmmakers don't get to make that many movies, or ones that are seen by that many people, so it doesn't really matter that you're
re-using locations. just get your film making game tight and most people would not care where you're shooting. to most real film makers, "actual
location" is a sign of a low budget, and most of them shoot on sets so it shouldn't really matter. you're low-budget in their eyes anyways, so
just be really good at it.

you have to listen to the commentary track of Ridley Scotts GLADIATOR ... its pure amazing and the best lesson for reusing locations.
I think it doesnt matter how ofter you use some location, I think whats important is that it fits to the content of your movie and that you let it look different all the time. |
