Backhand Spring Help |

I did the move once on instinct of putting my hands out when I almost fell on my head... but that was almost two years ago and I've been afriad to try.
I've heard a few basic tips such as practice on a mat and stuff... or get over the fear and stuff.... what other tips do you guys have for backhand
springs... cuzz I did it once so I know it's possible but I want to learn to control it.

When you do the move, keep your body straight and jump back, not up. When you backflip, jump up; when you back handspring, jump back. If you jump up, when you
land on your hands they'll almost certainly give out and you'll headplant. Jumping back allows your momentum to travel to your hands smoothly and then
carry your body through.
You'll want to start standing straight up, arms pointing directly ahead or up. As you jump, your body should fall into a position similar to sitting in an invisible chair, and at this point you want to be leaning back enough to where if you aborted the jump, you would fall backwards. Push off the ground and go back, bring those arms over your head in front of your ears. DON'T LOCK YOUR ELBOWS. You need some bend or there will be no "spring," only breakage and hospital bills. Think of the motion almost like skipping a stone off the surface of a body of water: if you throw the rock downward, it will just splash and sink. But if you throw it forward (backward in the move's cases) and allow its momentum to redirect on impact, it'll be smooth and successful. Good luck, don't hurt yourself! |

You're also gonna need a spotter who knows what they're doing. This isn't one of those things you should start off practicing yourself.

Find a gymnastics school/trainer. And before you say there's nobody in Redding, let me say if that's true then have patience and wait until you can get
someone. It's more important to learn it properly then to hurt yourself.
I disagree with the notion of jumping backwards and not up. I learnt this for 2 years and never got it properly (I got it but is was highly shithouse) until my newest coach told me to jump straight up and to force myself backwards through whipping my arms back as fast as possible (with relaxed shoulders like I just mentioned in the back-tuck thread). The thing is that the effort is more in the arm whip on this one then in the legs. These days I can finally do this move almost picture perfect. |

Yes id agree with DragonfighterX's advice on doing the back-handspring,as thats how i learned it.Jumping backwards as opposed to up definitely works
wonders,but the way Rob said about going up works just as well.Correct postioning of your arms and hands will help a lot,and will provide the momentum for the
BHS.It really depends on the individual,and what feels most comfortable.It really is important to learn it from someone,and for them to spot you.As with any
flip,learning by yourself isnt much fun.ive found having people who know what they're doing,training with you and scrutinising your technique,will help you
learn a lot quicker.Hope thats some help Darren

not a single move in itself. It really depends on your sit I suppose. If you sit arched back enough then I guess jumping up in your case would cause you to do
a proper backhandspring, however if you sit straight and then go straight up then your gonna undercut and possibly land on your neck if you bail

That's really not too bad for first attempts and by yourself. The most obvious flaw is that you're not really jumping, you're just kind of throwing
yourself backwards and wincing. Just because you don't travel upwards doesn't mean the jump isn't important. I'm glad to see you remembered to
do that "chair sit," but you're not quite leaning back far enough while you're doing it. If you were, in the time it took you to push off in
the video you probably would have fallen over. So sit back, jump
back, arch your back, spot, keep your arms strong and follow with the feet. I
guess what I'm really trying to say is backbackbackbackbackback!
