Posts: 218 (10/16/07 07:20:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Just read some news articles and there is talk that Tony Leung Chiu-wai and/or Donnie Yen will/might be starring in a movie abbut Wing Chun master Yip Man (Bruce Lee's master). Rumor is that there is possibly 2 movies.... I think Tony Leung is already confirmed to play the role because I remember seeing his interview on TV and he mentioned taking up Wing Chun lessons for an upcoming movie which I believe will be this one. Raymond Wong apparently will be making his version and he wants Donnie Yen to play Yip Man but Yen is still considering.

Stephen Chow and Donnie was suppose to do a movie about Yip Man, either Chow or Yen portraying the man but only one day of shooting took place before the project got canceled and abandoned.

The WKW & Sammos effort was a total waste, IMO. Same if he has to pair with Tony Leung Chi Wai or Stephen Chow, or whoever. I think anything he does with solid background people (SPLs or FPs ones) will be way better than that. Only exception, Id love to see a movie adaptation of comic books Shang Chi with Mr Yen on the lead, and Yuen Woo Ping directing. That would be a project.

From what I've seen, everyone goofs the style up for the screen. That WC tv show w/Sammo, Tse, etc. was weakness. Just don't trust anyone to get it right.

The project, tentatively called Grandmaster, traces Yip Man from leaving his hometown of Foshan in China's Guangdong province to teach Wing Chun in Hong Kong, to taking Bruce Lee as a disciple when he was in his 60s. Tony Leung has already started learning Wing Chun for the role. However, so far, there has been no sign of the film beginning production. Now, another studio, Mandarin Films, is also planning to make a biopic based on the same person, with Donnie Yen being invited to play Yip Man. Raymond Wong confirms that Mandarin Films has just decided to shoot this movie and is in initial stage of production, gathering information on the life of Yip Man, and in coming up with a script. Raymond Wong says that there won't be any conflict of interests between Wong Kar Wai's Grandmaster and his version for they would be taking a different approach. The main focus of Mandarin Films version would be martial arts. Donnie Yen whose schedule is tightly packed, has not confirmed his role. He's still considering about it as, among other reasons, Flash Point has taxed him physically. 10 years back, Jeff Lau teamed up with Corey Yuen to bring the story of Yip Man on the screen, with Donnie Yen as Yip Man and Stephen Chow as Bruce Lee. Donnie Yen had signed the contract and received part of the acting fee. However, the studio folded resulting in the project being abandoned.

The movie will be more dramatic than action, so Tony will be more useful. As much as we all like Donnie, that guy can't act at all. Guys like Jackie and Sammo are much more talented at acting.

Yip Man's eldest son, who serves as consultant for this project as well as Wong Kar Wai's version, has mentioned before that Donnie Yen was the prime choice to play his father. Rather than giving a definite reply, Donnie Yen says that he's still pondering over it, "Actually, I am facing quite a bit of pressure, Yip Man was behind the founding of Wing Chun sect in Hong Kong. I can't tarnish his image." On being queried who is best suited to play the role of Yip Man, Donnie Yen replies, "Tony Leung is an acclaimed actor, I can't be compared with him in acting; however, in terms of martial arts, can he be compared to me?" WKW with Tony Leung's version is still unconfirmed but Mandarin Films will be making their version. Raymond Wong said yesterday (article posted was 26/12/07) that shooting will be begin in February. The movie will include mostly the SPL team and stars both Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung with possible addition of Collin Chou/Ngai Sing and while it is about the life of Yip Man, the movie will focus more on the 'action'. Wong also says currently, they are doing more research on Yip Man's life and his son is supportive of this movie and will be the consultant of this production
