How do you guys train for technique speed? Specifically guys like Eric and Shawn, whose speed has increased exponentially since their earlier stuff. What kind
of training do you do, or do you do any at all?

I dunno really. I work out almost every day but I know other people who do that, and some of them are slugs.
I'm flattered that you pointed me out, but I have no idea what makes speed. I can tell you one thing: I have VERY stiff ligaments and tendons. Dunno if that helps, but it definitely makes stretching slow and painful.

Me fast? Not fast enough!! I am losing weight though.. So that's good I guess.
I don't currently train in anything specific for speed. If anything, in high school I used to use 5 lb ankle weights and do slow kicks. Just keep training and do a lot of repetition of your basics. Most importantly, make sure it is good form. JUST DO IT -Nike They didn't pay me to say that. I wish they did because I need money. -Shawn Bernal Lazy Brown Productions Demoreel 2008 (Updated)

I used to have great hand speed and did a speed punching drill everyday for 5min back when i used to train. it's pretty simple drill, but maybe I can
film/post it.
Shawn's right on about the kicks. Focus on form, and if the technique is good, the speed will come to bear naturally. |

Thanks for the replies d00ds. I guess I didn't really expect anybody to have like a speed-training routine, but I feel like I've sort of plateaud as
far as speed advances go, even though I know that it's very possible with someone with my body type and muscular structure to be faster. Lifting has helped
a lot, but other than that I don't really know what to do other than to just keep doing it.

Like Shawn said, form and technique is key. The better your form and better your muscles are all around at performing the move, the more natural and at ease
it will be. Try isometric exercises like Shawn stated cuz they'll build up the supporting muscles as well as the central muscles to perform technique. Also
footwork is key. Learn to slide into movements and really use whole body movement so its not your legs pushing you, but your legs, thighs, hips, abs, and back
pushing you into motion.

Which I'm still sad btw, that I didn't take Eric's offer. It looked so good! Manny |

What do you mean by twitch muscle exercises? Like reactive/nervous system stimulation?

One thing I can also say is sometimes you just have to push yourself to go faster. I know it sounds like a stupid thing to say like "kick higher",
but it really is true. Also, working with someone faster than you helps because you have a need to keep up. Both of these I learned from working with Eric on
Dogs of Chinatown. He's really fast & I was afraid I wouldn't be able to match his speed at all, but him moving so quickly caused me to go faster
than I expected. Then, even when I'd think I reached my max speed, he'd say "Let's do another take & let's go faster." and you
just sort of say ok & you do it. It made me go way faster than I thought I could.

I'm a big guy so certain things don't simply apply just to biology. I was always taught that form first, then technique, then power, then speed. Just
practice and let your body reach your limit.

Are you talking about speed in general, or speed for screen-fighting? I too, am a bigger guy. Speed has always been a concern of mine (especially for
screen-fighting), but it's definitely not everything.

What do you mean by twitch muscle exercises? Like reactive/nervous system stimulation?Exactly. Like the old hit here when the light goes on type of deal. Pretty simple, you can even take a small hanging bag (similar to a very small teardrop bag) and hit it as hard and accurate as you can (also as fast) and try not to let it get past a certain point in its return. Meaning like don't let it hit you or say, pass a line point. Also theres defense twitch exercises (people throwing specific attacks at target areas on your body) to get your reactive and receptive muscles to work by defending them at different zones. But much like the general consensus states, practice FORM and TECHNIQUE over everything. Cuz you could be punching as hard and as fast as you want, but I am pretty sure you wont be hitting as fast or hard as you'd like unless you apply it to proper form and techinque. Obviously half the reason for doing drills as this is so that when you gotta hit that fast, you WILL because you won't be thinking about it, as its already embedded in you thanks to your training. And really, all these exercises WILL help in speed whether its for fighting, defense, training, or screen fighting. Because from what everyones been saying here, it applies to overall conditioning, and thats something thats gonna benefit you not just from a fighters standpoint, but also from a performers or even general fitness standpoint (as it takes consistent repetition to maintain or gain such speed). After many years of training my kicks I think the only thing which really made me faster was drilling them millions of times at my fastest. it stands to reason
that whatever you practice is what you're going to get good at. So if you practice boxing and kicking at mid-pace you'll never get speed. I guess I was
lucky that my old TKD instructor was a crazy Macadonian who would always be screaming at us to go FASTER FASTER FASTER!!! That's how I got my speed.
Also, you need to learn to relax with techniques. Kicking or boxing while tensing up will make you slow as shit. |

On that note, there are ways to do every technique where you loosen up your body and let it fly, but you rely on your strength to counteract the momentum, and
that's the whipping effect. That's one way of doing techniques, because you could also power through things which produces a completely different
effect.
DFX, are you specifically asking for technique speed? Or fast tempo?

Not so much tempo, since I don't really film fights anymore, just pure single technique speed, especially for kickboxing matches. My boxing handspeed
isn't bad but I feel like my kicks should be faster, especially considering that I've made some major strength-gain improvements over the course of the
past year and my speed has hardly improved at all. I was just watching Contour and your (Eric) kicks are faster than a Bosnian funeral (and I know it was shot
24p but all your moves are still blazin' like the desert). You haven't always been that fast (no offense) and I figured you must be doing something
right to make so much improvement in such a short amount of time.

Now I think that's a hasty judgement. By the way, your new avatar is awesome, Lester.
So, in addition to my bi-weekly dynamic workouts (sprints, a jump training variation, and supplemental speed-strength work) I've added 30 yard bounds for hip-flexor strength and flexibility, and I've been stretching a lot more. Hopefully I'll see some improvement on my kicks within a couple weeks. One curious problem that I have that doesn't seem to bother other people is that when I'm training on the bag or sparring (barefoot) I have no problem, but when I'm wearing shoes my kicks slow down by like 10%. I'm sure the weight will always have a little bit of an effect but the fact that it affects me to that extent means I'm probably not explosive enough from the floor. I'll have to experiment with some cable work to see if I can do anything about that. |
