Thanks for the comments on camerawork. I've been working very hard at this (bothering many of the board members for hints and tips) and I'm happy it's paid off. I thought that the shot I have on the hand struggle was a good choice but I do agree that choreography at that point was a bit of a let down... I'll merge my comments on this with my reply to Eric...

Yeah, looking back I don't like the push/pull either. I wanted to try it and I don't think I'll use it again... at least not in that way. Ugh, hearing you call something in one of my videos cliche makes me want to kick my own ass since I've been warning the guys I do these videos with that I DO NOT want to put cliche stuff in. Well, I messed up here. And yes, I didn't like Colin's (guy I'm fighting) reaction to my kick after that unfortunate exchange on any of the takes. I do need to spend more time coaching my co-stars in their fight-acting.

To both of you (CHongL and Eric) I was considering grabbing Colin and doing a reshoot for a couple of things. But for such a small production and with Colin's availability (he has a 3 month old daughter) I didn't want to pull him away from his family for what would have been a 30 minute shoot plus a lot more travelling time. Excuses, excuses, excuses... eh?

Thanks Jay, I'm glad people are liking my camerawork more! No, it's not a new camera. Same old Sony DCR-TRV33E Mini-DV Handy Cam. I think it all looks different because of two/three things:

(1) I picked an outdoor area with great light (mostly).
(2) I cropped it to 1.85:1
(3) I played with the colour while editing. Nothing much, just a rise in contrast and saturation.

Hmmm, I guess we are al guilty of using clichéd combos and devices in our fights. I guess I just rather hard on myself and when I spot a mistake down the line it annoys me. Thanks for the tip on the missed punches. I feel my particular style of choreography is a little low on heavy hits. Regardless of whether I want to keep it that way or not I should focus on being more creative then starting every fight of with jab(miss) cross(miss) or some close variation. Cheers for the advice, man.

Thanks man. The bat breaking was originally an idea from my Hong Kong counterpart who I'm making the feature film with. It took damn near 20-30 minutes to completely set up the stunt but I'm happy with how it looked.

OH FUCK OFF JON!!! Again with this "get the camera closer" shit?!?!??! Just kidding of course!!! Yes, I agree. I liked where I shot about half of the dialogue but some parts (My "Doesn't hurt at all") were shot a bit too far away. It was more due to my absent mindedness rather than a conscious choice on that one since I have remembered your advice and tried to employ it. Thanks for watching and giving me good advice as always, man!

I've used Adobe premiere pro CS3 since the end of SCARFOOT. What I do is begin by shooting in 16:9 on my camera and make sure that I frame everything in such a way that nothing important will get cut off when I crop it into 1.85:1. After I capture the footage I use Adobe photoshop to make an image which matches my film's picture size but which is TRANSPARANT. It's also important to select the pixel aspect ratio to be 16:9 when you do this. I then add in the correctly sized black bars at the top and bottom (do a bit of mathematical number crunching to get the exact amount of pixels) of the transparent background. I save the image and Import it into my project workspace on Premiere and devote one video track to this "Black Bar Overlay" I've created. So basically I've made fake black bars and pasted them over the top of my work.

In the end I've not really cropped it into 1.85:1. It's still a 16:9 sized video but there are black bars sort of glued onto the top and bottom. If you wanted to actually crop the footage (ie: not just have black bars to make it look cropped) I'm sure Premiere can do that. Does that help? I actually got this idea of Eric when he mistakenly told me to do this when I was asking a completely different question... Thanks, Eric.

I produce the final video (For streaming sites on the net like YouTube and Facebook Video) with the settings on Premiere's Media Encoder:
