I just love how everyone in this film knows Judo, but Tony Leung is the baddest of all bad asses. His entrance outside still makes me laugh. I dunno, this movie was good in most respects, but its ok compared to his other fare (Johnnie To I'm speaking of). Still a worthy watch in my opinion, though. Manny |

Eh, it was ok. He ATTEMPTED to make it epic, but I wouldn't say it fell flat, I would just say some of the execution wasn't as good. I would say PTU is
more fitting of his artistic flair. This felt more experimental, though I'm sure most would disagree on my comment about PTU.
I think that Throw Down has an excellent story and characters, but the film should have been more like that tracking shot of Tony Leung in terms of its fights. I think the other best fight is him against Aaron Kwok in the dojo. That last fight just wasn't the best. I could see his artsy side coming out, but considering this was a homage to Kurosawa films, I think had should have lessened the craziness of the camera during some of the fights. I wouldn't have minded it at all if he kept everything a wide and let the actors/stuntmen do the work, cuz they clearly trained well for the roles. I have nothing against Tony Leung Ka Fai. Hes a great actor, but its just funny to see him in such a SERIOUS role where hes a badass. Not that he couldn't pull it off, its just funny, considering his character track records in HK. I thought he was fantastic as well in this, but that scene where he's introduced just makes me laugh cuz hes always playing the bumbling type of sidekick, the weasely guy, or some type of very heroic figure. I dunno, I just have a weird sense of humor. Manny |

yeah, the movie does focus on other things aside the judo/rivalry connection between the masters/champs in between affecting the play. but I thought the
direction made it epic and fascinating nonetheless.
I think Ka Fai has turned into a great actor, I always used to think of him as a 'softie' but good thing To made Election and gave him a different character to play with. He's a varied player to me now (in the likes of Sean Lau and Simon Yam) but as of late he does seem to stick to the same character in other movies he's been in (Eye in the Sky, The Drummer etc). Might be the norm of personas in HK movies but still great.

I love this movie, and I've always wanted to do a short with this kinda atmosphere. It's as if guns don't even exist in this world and nobody
blinks an eye when people start to "throw down" with judo. Fucking awesome.

you'd have to see the movie to understand. its much more than just fights. its all about character and character personalities.
For example, most guys in the movie were all part of the same "judo club" back in the day and now most are loan sharks or gangsters or whatever. Thus, everyone has their own skill sets and rank and when Tony Leung's character comes strolling through, everyone at this point of the movie kept talking about how he used to be the biggest pussy ever, but somehow is now the craziest dude. Thus, this is why he just strolls through and rocks EVERYONE without even trying. The emphasis isn't on stylistic take downs, but real situation based judo, where its all about hurting the dude asap and without hurting yourself. If you've watched older Kurosawa films and then watch this movie, you normally can "get" where to is coming from. If your not used to watching johnnie to movies period, they can be really experimental dramas and even his much closer to reality type of films he's made of late are still much more unique to his style and way of directing. He's a FANTASTIC director, but by no means conventional and his style of action is unique to his own way. It's wonderful in my opinion, but if your used to liking a specific thing, you probably won't like To unless you get out of your box. (Not saying that you don't get/like his films or understand them, but just making a general statement about To) Manny |

Also, I never thought it would be possibly to make a mostly grappling-based art look that cool on screen. Love this
movie.
