Action Team) and I'm finally feeding y'all with some footage.
I was just about to delete this footage, we wanted to reshoot it from scratch coz we couldn't book any lights to shoot the scene...instead, I took a shot
at editing it, and it doesnt look too bad. I know it's a little dark, but bear with me on this...just enjoy the freaking fight already!!!

really great fighting - performance, editing, and choreography.
but, it's extremely dark at so many spots, sometimes I can't even see the hands. I can tell what's going on just because I've been watching kungfu movies since birth, but if there's a way you can up the gain a little bit, enough to see the hands, so the general audience can understand what's going on as well. |

Definitely bring up that brightness. You can bump the brightness and contrast at least.

Thanks Eric, thanks Pete. Other guys in my team somewhat don't mind the darkness thing for these reasons:
1) it goes with the storyline since these guys are brawling in a bar "after hours", after closing. 2) it really makes the audience pay close attention. It's a teaser after all, lol. 3) increased brightness in post reveals noise and poor image quality due to lack of lighting on set. -I'm happy with the fighting myself, the boys did a good job...I do have some room to play with the brightness...we will soon come to a decision of whether to reshoot it with lights or not. But thank you guys again. |

In real life it does, but if it means your characters are going to disappear into the background when we're supposed to see them, then the effect is worthless, right? You can do "after hours" lighting in so many ways. The way you've done it, it just looks like you didn't use lighting. 2) The same could be said of intentionally using bad camerawork. I would think you'd want the audience's attention to be on seeing the fighting, not trying to figure out what's happening. Low light for effect is one thing, but all your action is exposition. People will pay more attention when they can see what they're supposed to see. 3) I think the reupload you did looked better. Give me poor image quality over "not being able to see". In the end the content takes priority and you'll do anything to show it. I would definitely shoot with lights next time. Light the background way more to separate yourselves, and avoid any clothes that may blend in with things.

actually, they bring UP the lights after hours - so they can clean.
in the future, try to bring a little lamp of some kind (preferably a soft source - a lantern is ideal) at all times so you can light the characters' eyes. eye lights make a whole world of difference - you don't really have to see the other features, but just seeing the eyes can let the audience know that you're hiding the rest of the features on purpose. back to the choreography - I love the hand exchange, it really is quite awesome. it's fast and feels original. especially at 1:07 - and ending the sequence with that fall is quite brilliant. good editing as well. but there's some basic stuff you should be aware of next time - like pausing between the exchanges just a little bit more for the closeups of the characters - or in Jackie Chan's (lack of) words - let the audience know "wooooowww" - you need to let the audience know how the fight is going, who is winning and losing - I know it's absurd to you and me, but it'll make a big difference, when you just pause on the close-ups. otherwise, to the untrained eyes- it'll just looks like fighting fighting fighting and they will not delve into it as much. for example, I could follow the choreography, no problem, but I did not even get a sense of what the good guy wants vs. what the bad guy wants (does one want the other dead? or just hurt? or wants him to talk? is he angry?) and more importantly, I could not tell which one was the good guy. these are things to look out for the next time you shoot stuff - just adding a few extra shots and placing the camera differently can make all the difference in the world and make your fight that much more accessible and exciting.

thanks again Pete, very good...but trust me, I usually include a good amount of characterization in my fight scenes (close-ups+emotions+dialogue) like I did in
my last feature film. This was just about 65% of the entire fight, there's a pre-dialogue, pre-fight, mid-dialogue and climax which do have a lot of
characterization of course. I just didn't include that in this teaser fight clip.
"I could not tell which one was the good guy" - that's actually a good sign for me!!! because that's the MAIN premise of this film - "the world isn't just made up of good people and bad people, it's a lot more complicated than that". |

You can have characterization without dialogue. That's the best really. Doing it with dialogue is so much harder and it'll end up feeling forced. Bring
it out in the action and it'll be 10 times more character-driven.

first off good fight.
i gotta agree with eric. shooting dark was the way 80's horror movies did night (when you'd barely see anything for a minute), but now movies tend to adopt a more representational (stylistic) approach to night, usually having lots of dark areas but keeping a fairly powerful backlight and often sidelight on the subjects to distinguish them from the background and provide a little more detail. A backlight here would have gone a long way, and could even be gelled blue to seem like a neon sign or mood light from the bar. I accidentally got an extra-dark restaurant fight scene in DOGS because the camera was new to me, and I trusted the misleadingly bright LCD screen early on. I've managed to correct it a good bit. Instead of bringing up the entire brightness of the scene, I used the 3-way color collector in FCP to just bring up the highlights and midtones, while leaving the blacks black. So if you have that program or something similar, that's a good way to go. If you have magic bullet, I was able to use the Look Suite filter's (no preset) 3-strip process to lighten and separate the darkest areas some without compromising the true spots of black. |

The lighting made it hard to see a lot of it.... hard to judge when I couldn't see enough of the fight.

Brighter version definitely helped a ton haha. I had no idea what the club even looked like in the first ver.
I really like it. Cool fight. The jump off the wall just to choke him was a bit random though haha |
