A-1 (2004)

A female reporter (Angelica Lee) decide to find out the truth of how his boyfriend, a reporter she just broke up with, died after two debt collectors (Anthony Wong and Eric Kot) told her their theory that he was murdered.

The movie has a good start for building up the main characters and that drives the story completely and strongly but however this becomes worse as it reaches somewhere between the middle or near the end of the movie. New character relations are created and while it's supposed to focus on one single event, these relations go deeper than otherwise and it this point everyone, including the underdeveloped characters, get to show their other sides of their personalities which I think was boring and not needed. It didn't help either to expose the truth as less as possible (you get few of it but the rest is untold) leaving you quite alot to think about. Shame, because a good story gets vandalized by all these twists and emotions from the characters too much. The cast is great though: Angelica Lee holds her own against her co-stars and makes a good lead actress, while more experienced actors like Anthony Wong and Gordon Lam deliver the goods like they always does. Edison Chen was ok, nothing remarkable but still noticeable because he plays a clumsy character. Overall, it's decent but the script loses all chances to make a much better movie. Rating: 2/5

Besieged City (2008)

A school student is told by the cops that his younger brother has been hospitalized and charged for murder of a female friend who was the girlfriend of a gangleader and also leading a gang the brother was part of. He visits him to check up on how he ended up like this. Unable to get any answers, he decides to look up his brother's remaining friends for more insights and stories.

Lawrence Law is no stranger to what goes on with youths in HK society and pretty much knows it all inside and out. Movies like Spacked Out and Gimme Gimme are told very well about this issue and with this movie, he lets his direction do the talk once again. But this time, he's envisioning the deepness of what goes on in youths mind and what causes them to act and behave the way they do. It's a bit different from his previous movies. I read an interview with him (read here) and according to him, he wanted to show the evolvement of HK youth life from whatever decades to nowadays. This is indeed a very interesting choice but at the same time quite down-bringing concerning the youth mentality, as one might get the feeling that most youths in HK are THIS complicated and mind-twisted because of this damaging image (I don't buy it though, unless you're dealing with WAY worse gangs or live a much rougher life than that portrayed in the movie). Aside this slight flaw, I found the movie positively intense and depressed; with Lau's realistic (I suppose, it's hard to tell) storytelling and great use of actors, locations/cinematography, and music. Rating: 4/5
