It looks too rehearsed, and it's a little too fast.I agree. I'm used to the speed because, well it's a Donnie Yen movie. Though I'm used to it I don't really like it haha. And also that first exchange with the trading of kicks totally looked like they were performing a demo. Like it was a practice run. Kinda like the training scene between Jackie and YB in Wheels on Meals. Donnie and Robin didnt look that convincing. Doesn't help that Donnie doesnt emote during those long exchanges. He always has the stoic, expressionless 'I'm a master kicking your ass' face on. That works in cases where he is better than the other guys like in Iron Monkey but not in this case. He had a lot more expression in Flashpoint. Mostly the rage aspect but still, he wasnt stone faced.

good points here. but as far as how fights were done convincingly or related to reality, this wasn't the HK choreographers' concern as they were more
into open techs, setting-up, execution, outlooks, speed and so forth. I think the reason fights like this are a bit criticized now is because there have been
many MA movies recently that rely on real fighting techs, practical stuff that shows a more authentic sense of realism shown on camera. this has been on the
map for many years, but took THAT many years until those techs got the right treatment for that particular authentic movie style. this fight is nothing like we
see alot today but it still works because that's was the authentic (their own sense of realism, may it be
realistic or the other way around) style of Hong Kong back then.
about the donnie vs woods fight in ItLoD4, it was an overall great idea but Woo Ping's planning was crap. he made it separative when he could've thrown in all these various fight techs back and forth instead and make the fight vary and go everywhere. |

Overrated fight - I'd even go as far as to say that it's a pretty bad fight. Choreography does nothing for me, Robin Shou's form is weird, Donnie
can execute moves so much better than that (even now, in his fourties he can still move better than that), camerawork and editing is very basic... I've
never understood the love for Tiger Cage 2, or In the Line of Duty IV for that matter.

I wouldn't say the fight is bad, just that there are things about it that irk me a bit. The constant
standing-in-place exchanging is a little annoying, and @ the "realism" statement, I don't need fights to be comprised mainly of grappling and
biting... it's just that I have a hard time getting into these fights where guys are just getting absolutely hammered with punches and kicks and it's
not even effecting them until the "final blow." That's what this fight looks like--two dudes with invincibility and turbo speed cheat codes on.

I think it's lost some of its magic now that we've got good action coming out of other countries too. It was the shit back in the 90's when most of
us discovered it because our only other alternative was Bloodsport... but now that we've seen more/different/better action scenes and styles, it's
easier to subject it to some criticism. That's not to say that I don't still have fun watching HK fights, I've just never been one to subscribe to
the idea that anything HK is gold.

Okay thats understandable, never really thought like that before even though its fairly obvious.
I grew up with HK cinema being the king, and for me, it will always be the king

been elevated so far that a movie that was once considered to be a classic of the mindless martial arts action genre is now thought of as mediocre or even
unentertaining. It's startling to think that a movie the majority of us used to eat up can't hold it's own for more than a decade or two.
It's not what I'm trying to put in MY movies these days, but it's nice to look back at the style that use to define HK, at any rate.

It is shocking although I still and always will think that this is a classic, in fact it is a masterpiece. It's startling to think that a movie the majority of us used to eat up can't hold it's own for more than a decade or two. It's not what I'm trying to put in MY movies these days, but it's nice to look back at the style that use to define HK, at any rate. I think we should all be appreciative to movies like these and the HK style because that is our main influence by far for most of us. I will always go back to my roots.

I agree that it's a classic and a masterpiece in its own way, it's just not my ideal type of fighting. Still very enjoyable though. But I agree, Jon.
In fact, thats the same shocked feeling I get when I see people on this board already putting down Tony Jaa films...

I always thought he looked great in HK films. I love Mortal Kombat but its no where nearly as good as his HK fights, good stunts though. Nowadays it looks like
he has artritis in his hips or an injury or something, not much flexibility. Perhaps we will get to see him fight Statham in Death Race
