Oh look a butterfly! |

Hey everyone. Lately I've been in a bit of a slump. I've been learning a bit of wushu on the side to prepare myself for fight choreography, and there
is one move that's really pissing me off. I Can't seem to get my butterfly kick down. I've done it right a few times, but that success now eludes
me. Any advice? Oh and I will try and get a vid of my suckiness up asap.

The Dip is important, as well as knowing how to control your body. I'll need a video to really see what your doing wrong

From the looks of it, your throwing yourself sideways and trying to just move rather than go up. With the butterfly kick you want to feel a hover. The
technique to go up is the dip before the take off which is very important. I wish I had a video of my butterfly kick since it would help the most for me to
demonstrate.
Heres a crappy tutorial I made a year or two ago when I first got it and it was still pretty bad. http://s134.photobucket.com/albums/q91/KidInferno/?action=view¤t=MOV02942.flv Ill see if I can go about making a new one for you soon. |

All I know is get a good dip... it's what I'm doing to get the move ok at best.

Whoa! That video quality is beyond bad. I can't tell what you're doing in it. If I were to take a guess at what you're doing wrong I'd say
it's a 99% chance that you're throwing yourself sideways rather then dipping down in a nice smooth U shape.
I found this in your video's RELATED section which might help you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAyP7EKCr38 He talks about doing b-twists but the setup and jump is the same. |

I really hate having to convert my vids to put them on youtube. I think I get what I was doing wrong though. I'm trying to swing my legs across, when i
should be kicking up.

I think "hover" was a good word to use to describe the motion of a butterfly kick. The dip is important. It doesn't have to be super perfect or
super low, but it's the smoothest way to segway into the movement and it's pretty hard to get there without dipping first. As you dip, you should shift
your body weight to your jumping leg and at the top of the "U" throw your first (landing) leg up hard and high--don't jerk it, but know that the
higher your first leg goes, the smoother the move will be. It also helps if yu don't actually think of it as a kick... I've always found that pretty
misleading.

I do everything right up to the take off now. I tried Epic's idea of kicking my head, but I'm still going vertical.

Wait...Epic as in the tricker who is constantly wearing XMA pants? DON'T EVER LISTEN TO THAT DUDE! His tutorials are crap. He made a cork tutorial that is
so far off from what a real cork is and everything he says is BS. Also Don't take advice from expert village considering the Bkick guy refers to everything
as "a wushu"

DevinWho wrote: I wouldn't write off EVERYTHING Epic has to say... some of his stuff is a little unorthadox or doesn't work out well... but he still pulls off the moves and works for some extra advice that can help... his backhandsping one helped me a little. Remember not everyone does the moves exactly the same set up and technquie... it's the same with martial arts... teachers are teach different ways.

DevinWho wrote: Yeah... when someone refers to a move as a "Wushu" you know they're an idiot. I just gave him that link since it showed how to do a good takeoff. |

darrenh7 wrote: True. But as a tricker its easy to spot out an idiot. Hes good ill give him that, but a lot of his stuff is BS. He makes crap up which screws up ppl who
watch his tutorials. Im mainly refering to his corkscrew tut since its not a legit cork. He spins vertically almost the entire way and then turns sideways last
second. Thats not a real cork

DevinWho wrote: I don't think trickers are in a position to be calling other people idiots. I just posted the link because he did the move right. I'm not talking about a corkscrew or a 9879470 triple axel siamese hook kick, the topic was on
butterfly kicks and his tutorial has good advice.

Haha, I was just kidding man. I actually consider myself a tricker too (although I hate the term), it was just a little jab.
