Awesome job, Micah and crew! I like the new choreo feel that you guys are using and my favorite part was Johnny vs. Everyone. No fancy back and forth, just
straight solid and hard hits. Keep it up!

I'll try and find a place to upload it as flash. Vimeo screws up the syncronization of the sound too badly when I tried it.

Nevermind Micah... i ended up playing with FileJucier and got a quicktime temporary copy....
First of all the HD is cool. And the overall presentation looks very professional. I usually hate shaky cam... this time I didn't mind... it was used intelligently and everything stayed visible.... a lot like the camerawork in Chocolate. Now fights.... First fight with the bat was pretty realistic but the lots of the good parts were spoiled and going into a whusu stance with a bat I did have a hard time taking seriously.... then again Wu Jing did it with a knife so what do I know...lol... I didn't like the arm break reaction.... if a limb breaks.... a normal person would be screaming and his reaction was a little weak. The group fight was very Tony Jaa except the formation was executed better with an exchange here and there and didn't feel repetitive... spolied a little but paid off watching. second best fight imo. Your fight with Dennis..... FUCKING BADASS!!! Loved the exchanges and kicks. Best fight on the film. probably your best fight to date. Girl fight, once again very Tony Jaa like.... all the kicks looked powerful. You against Jacob wasn't much of a fight...lol One of the kicks looked like it connected too low and looked like it missed. Ok... as far as acting.... everyone seemed to know their parts... no one seemed to over act or try hard instead it looked very natural. Jacob's best acting too. The music choice was awesome. Great work Micah. Your best vid to date. Can't wait for Shaun's story.

What are you guys watching this with? I've tried it on three different players and it's always at least a little bit choppy.

Very choppy for me too, but that's because it's HD and my computer is a WWII tank.

Here's a link to the crappy crackle flash version:
http://www.crackle.com/c/Short_Films/Johnny_Owes/2319278#ml=fi%3d%26fu%3d2239136 It pulled the framerate from 24p to 30i, which added interlaced ghosting to the frames. I'd only suggest this if you can't find any other way to view it in HD WMV. Unfortunately the file was too big for tubemogul |

Wait! I'm a moron. I'll just split the film into two parts, and upload them both to youtube. I'll have youtube links up for the film in a day or
two.

Okay, finally got around to watching this. It was hard to see what was going on most of the time because of the choppiness but I got the idea. Looked great,
colors were a little saturated but that's probably what you were going for so my opinion doesn't count. Acting was better than average. Locations were
pretty nice. Now I'll get to the action:
I didn't really dig the first fight for a few reasons. First, the setting was extremely boring. I always have trouble paying attention when somebody's fighting in an empty room, and the fact that there were like three different empty rooms didn't help much. I also had a little beef with the choreo, as I spent the whole time thinking that nobody would ever attack with a baseball bat like that, it was too "fluttery" and fancy for such a straight forward "I'm going to beat the shit out of you" kind of weapon. Also, some of the defensive moves kind of threw me off guard, like the mule kick. But the flying armbar was great and I liked that he actually got hit quite a few times for a touch of realism. Not bad. The parking lot fight was awesome. At first I wasn't sure I liked where it was going, some of the TKD-isms were a little excessive, but after the first wave things got a lot cooler very quickly. My only gripe was the two backflip-kicks in a row felt a little clustered. Awesome choreo and great shots though. The fight with Dennis was great as well, but it felt a little pointless, I think because there was that bit of buildup and then it just ended very abruptly. Physically though, it was a spectacle. I never understood how people kick in Chucks. The fight with Tess was probably my second favorite. The choreography reminded me a lot of the finale of Ong Bak (probably because most of it was very similar) and the real impact looked great, well done. I also like the "You want my number?" line. I didn't feel like the fight after that was really necessary though. It could've been done in a move or two and then ended, but the bit of "inside" dialogue was strange because it was like a 10 minute short, and the extended beating reminded me of Chosen One vs. Betty at the end of Kung Pow!. I liked the last shot though. Overall I enjoyed it for what it was--a way to test out a new style of fight choreography. But it felt a little empty or bland or something because of how abrupt and simple some of the cinematography and editing was. It felt really rushed, and I guess I expected too much because I know that you could do a lot better. So I guess most of what I didn't enjoy was my fault in a way for how I watched it. |
