Okay, you want everything to be good but lets be honest there are things that matter more than others. depends on what you're trying to reach. choreography should, of course, be there to help you get along and if you just want choreography to happen then it won't matter much how you play with film-making, as long as you get something done. However, if we're talking about specialty or choreography that stands out you would want to try out something more by taking advantage of other ways to make the choreography special and substantial. so in regards to saberdjedi's comment, I completely agree that every aspect of film-making should be good. otherwise the choreography wouldn't be interesting, even if the choreography is well done, progressive or whatever. editing, music, sound effects, you name it... every factor is as important as the choreography itself, there's no factor considered better or less important than others. |

Yeah, I believe that you should make a good fight in whatever way you can. If you like to use shapes and and longer takes, that's good, or if you like to
use more more technical skill like editing and good cinematography, that's good too. LOTW definitely falls in the latter category. If Donnie had simply cut
the film conventionally or had conventional sound placement, the fight as a whole would have completely fell apart. LOTW's fights excel as a whole
filmmaking experience, not just a choreo showcase. I think it takes incredible skill to do that. Compared to old school, LOTW wins on a filmmaking level, but
probably not on the choreo, which is a mixed bag. A minority of shots in that film could stand alone as excellent choreo, as a lot of shots are either basic or
barely choreographed at all, which is more of testament to the limitations Donnie was working with. For example, in the first forest fight, a lot of stuff is
actually just not there. There's really only 2 to 4 shots that are genuinely good and original stuff, the majority of the fight is random flailing and
Donnie showing off his kicks in single shots, and the latter 2 don't really count as good choreo. If you don't believe me, watch the fight in slow
motion, and do it objectively. There's a reason why the fight is the way it is though, and it boils down to money and time. A film of LOTW's budget
can't afford to keep all those stunt men around at the same time. However, the way the fight is shot allows Donnie to move around that. Definitely, not
genius choreo, but definitely great filmmaking.

Another thread hijacked by LOTW discussion.
Somewhere in the distance Donnie Yen must be laughing maniacally. |

Another thread hijacked by LOTW discussion. and for once, it wasn't me who brought it up and I hear what you're saying Saber and I agree with most of it but I do feel you're doing a little injustice to the choreography. Also I rarely hear people talk about Donnie's performance in that movie, some of his kicks are just extremely good and impressive, and that isn't down to good filmmaking.

I don't think this is a hijacked thread. It's not an argument over LOTW being good or crap. Graeme and I agree it's great, we just disagree on the
minutia. I only say LOTW's wasn't that great, because I know Donnie could have done better with more time. It's simplistic relative to his work in
SPL and Flashpoint, and much of the reason is because he was limited by time and money. There's no way Donnie could have done better with that situation,
but I think he really made the best of it.

CTHD, The Matrix Reloaded, Kung Fu Hustle, Dragon Tiger Gate, Flash Point(my god), Executioner from Shaolin, Shaw Bros in general.
I agree that sound is one of the most important elements of a fight scene. |
